Nucleation and Growth of Dendritic Islands during Platinum Oxidation-Reduction Cycling

چکیده
Platinum is the model catalyst in fuel cells because of its high activity toward oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation. However, applicability limited due to degradation under operating conditions. This process has been extensively studied by repeatedly oxidizing reducing electrode, which leads roughening surface nucleation growth platinum nano-islands. Although general picture this well known, atomic details concerning early islands are still debate. In work, we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculate formation energies diffusion barriers an adatom, both unoxidized oxidized state, with aim provide further insight into phenomena. Moreover, analyze from STM images obtained experimentally shape nano-islands during first stages growth. Our results show not only that form surface, but also they grow a dendritic island shape, similarly formed vacuum Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE).

Capture zone area distributions for nucleation and growth of islands during submonolayer deposition.
A fundamental evolution equation is developed to describe the distribution of areas of capture zones (CZs) associated with islands formed by homogeneous nucleation and growth during submonolayer deposition on perfect flat surfaces. This equation involves various quantities which characterize subtle spatial aspects of the nucleation process. These quantities in turn depend on the complex stochas...
متن کاملThe morphology and nucleation kinetics of copper islands during electrodeposition
We describe a study, using in situ transmission electron microscopy, of the shape and nucleation kinetics of three-dimensional islands formed during the electrochemical deposition of copper. By operating an electrochemical cell within an electron microscope, we obtain real-time images of the formation of copper islands on a gold electrode while simultaneously recording electrochemical data such...

Atomically dispersed catalyst consisting of Pt atoms arranged in a c(2 × 2) array on RuO2(110) substrate was prepared. A large interatomic distance of Pt atoms in a c(2 × 2) phase precludes the reactants to interact with more than one Pt atoms. A strong bond of Pt atoms with RuO2 prevents agglomeration of Pt atoms to form 2D-islands or 3D-clusters. Activities of single Pt atom catalyst for the ...

This experimental thesis deals with self-organization phenomena in electrochemical systems. Two aspects are considered. On the one hand, the impact of a periodic variation of the applied voltage on a bistable electrochemical system is investigated. On the other hand, the interaction of an oscillatory reaction kinetics with a spatial coupling via the electric field of the electrolyte (migration ...
